Wandering Spider with Centipede

It’s a bug-eat-bug world out there and this Blue-Legged Centipede was definitely having a rough day.

I spotted this scene occurring in the jungles of the Colombian Amazon and was blown away in particular by the colours of these two minibeasts – the vibrant blue and yellow of the centipede contrasted with the tiger-like orange and black of the spider.

Wandering Spiders of the family Ctenidae are amongst some of the most ferocious hunters in the arachnid world. They roam the forest floor at night and pounce dramatically at anything small enough to be prey, and many species in this family have a highly potent venom. Indeed, the Brazilian Wandering Spiders of the genus Phoneutria are one of the few spiders in the world to have human deaths recorded to their names.

I’m not 100% sure on the species photographed here, but one thing is for sure – the centipede never stood much of a chance…
