Mating Barred Monkey Frogs

Please enjoy some HOT frog sex.

These amorous amphibians are Barred Monkey Frogs, photographed in the intricate act of making more Barred Monkey Frogs – and the act is certainly intricate.

The pair begin by selecting an ideal love-making location, typically suspending themselves directly above a body of water. It’s possible that the danger makes it more exciting, but the main reason for this behaviour is actually to ensure that their future children get the best start in life.

The proud parents wrap a leaf around themselves and then deposit their fertilised eggs onto the leaf’s surface, where they begin to develop. Eventually, the tadpoles emerge from the eggs and drop directly into the body of water below, just as mum and dad had planned.

Bet you weren’t expecting that erotic frog tale to turn into such a wholesome story of excellent parenting, were you? 🐸

PS. How cool is that nictitating membrane on the male!? I’m still mad that evolution took away my translucent eyelid.
