Midnight Feast…
Okay, so a little while ago, I visited an amazing jungle hostel on Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula called Bolita. It was hands-down one of my favourite places I’ve ever stayed – the property borders Corcovado National Park and has kilometres upon kilometres of walking trails that guests can explore at their leisure. It was a beautiful location, and ridiculously good value compared to the rest of Costa Rica.
I booked Bolita for the end of December thinking that it might be a cool place to bring in the new year. But alas, everyone went to bed well before midnight. So, naturally, I went out looking for snakes instead (I do occasionally socialise with other human beings, I swear).
It had been a relatively uneventful evening of wildlife-spotting, so I stumbled back to the lodge around 11:45pm, and was just about to call it a night (and a year) when I spotted this incredible scene. A Blunt-Headed Snake had caught a small Anole lizard and was in the process of devouring it at the top of the stairs to the balcony. I spent some time photographing the pair, and I glanced at my watch just as the final tip of the lizard’s tail disappeared into the snake’s mouth – it was exactly midnight.
So if you had a rough end to last year, you can at least console yourself that it wasn’t as bad as this lizard’s 🤷♂️
