Say hello to the spectacular Soul-Stealing Moth…
Scientists have recently discovered that this species of moth captures the souls of human beings who disrespect the natural world.
After identifying its target, typically the CEO of a fossil fuel company or literally anyone who owns a private jet, the moth consumes their soul through a process known as pterophagy – literally, ‘wing-eating’.
Deceased specimens of these moths have never been encountered, and so it’s assumed that the captured soul must spend eternity trapped within the moth’s wing as it flutters aimlessly about the jungle.
This particular soul belonged to a billionaire who asked to remain anonymous. I tried to enquire as to what the experience inside the moth’s wing was like, but the individual just kept screaming “Oh god, why was I such a selfish prick?” over and over again.
These beautiful moths are found right throughout the neotropics, and play an essential biological role within the complex ecosystems they inhabit.
