This portrait of a ring-tailed lemur was taken at Melbourne Zoo. Lemurs are highly social animals, so much so that the zoo allows you to walk right through their enclosure. They can live in groups of up to 30 members in the wild.
Having evolved independently on the island of Madagascar, lemurs are one of the most unique groups of species on our planet.
Hands-down my favourite fact about lemurs is that they have TWO TONGUES. Their main tongue, like most tongues, is used for eating. However, they also have a stiffer secondary tongue which is designed for grooming other lemurs.
